AFSCME 3299 represents not only campus service staff, but also nearly 19,000 UC patient care technicians. Both units have been working without a contract since 2017 and are leading six strikes as well as a spokesman boycott that led the Democratic National Committee to move a scheduled december presidential debate from UCLA. “[UC] is pleased that after working with AFSCME leadership to address common concerns and resolve our outstanding differences, we have reached a multi-year agreement for our valued collaborators,” UC spokesman Andrew Gordon said in an email. The University of California today (Jan. 28) announced preliminary four-year contracts with the U.S. Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) union, which represents UC`s approximately 16,000 patient care and 10,000 service workers. After more than two years without a contract and numerous strikes, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 entered into a preliminary agreement with the University of California for UC service staff and university administrators on January 22, 2020. If AFSCME 3299 members vote in favour, more than 8,000 UC service officers and university administrators will have an employment contract ending one of the university`s longest labor disputes. The provisional contract must be voted on by union members before January 30 to come into effect. Members of the AFSCME Local 3299 service unit will vote on the ratification of the agreement by January 30 and the Local 3299 bargaining team recommends a “yes”.

The Care Unit and UC patients are expected to continue negotiations this week. “These preliminary contracts, secured in good faith through the hard work and efforts of the AFSCME and UC bargaining teams, reflect the importance of UC staff in carrying out our mission,” said John A.
